Exploring Tbilisi

Sulphur Baths, Tbilisi

Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi, is a wonderful starting point for discovering the country. Its location along the banks of the Mtkvari River has shaped its history, while its architecture reflects centuries of cultural influences.

Wandering through the Old Town, you’ll find colourful balconies, narrow cobbled streets, historic churches and traditional bathhouses. Elsewhere, grand avenues and distinctive modern architecture reveal a city that continues to evolve.

There is so much to discover in Tbilisi that one visit barely scratches the surface.

Discovering the Kakheti Wine Region

Views from Nekrisi, Kakheti

Beyond Tbilisi lies Kakheti, Georgia’s celebrated wine-producing region. With its rolling vineyards, historic monasteries and charming towns, it offers a very different perspective on the country.

Georgia has one of the world’s oldest winemaking traditions, with archaeological evidence dating back approximately 8,000 years. Traditional Georgian winemaking, using large clay vessels known as qvevri, remains an important part of its cultural heritage.

Our day exploring Kakheti took us through a landscape rich in history and tradition. We discovered historic religious sites, beautiful scenery and the fascinating stories behind this distinctive region.

Skiing in Gudauri

Skiing Gudauri

High in the Greater Caucasus Mountains, Gudauri is one of Georgia’s best-known ski resorts and a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts. Located along the Georgian Military Highway, the resort is surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery and offers a very different experience from the country’s historic cities and wine regions.

Gudauri is known for its long ski season, wide slopes and varied terrain. It caters to beginners and intermediate skiers, while more experienced visitors can enjoy challenging runs and opportunities for off-piste skiing when conditions allow. The resort’s high altitude also means that the surrounding peaks are often covered in snow well into the spring.

Even if you’re not a skier, Gudauri is worth visiting for its spectacular scenery. The journey through the mountains is an experience in itself, with sweeping views across the Caucasus and plenty of opportunities to appreciate Georgia’s rugged landscape.

Exploring Kutaisi

Walking Kutaisi

Situated in western Georgia, Kutaisi is one of the country’s oldest cities and an important cultural and historical centre. Its location on the Rioni River gives it a relaxed atmosphere, while its historic landmarks reveal the city’s long and fascinating past.

Kutaisi is closely associated with Georgia’s ancient history and the legendary kingdom of Colchis. The city is also home to important religious monuments, including Bagrati Cathedral and the nearby Gelati Monastery, both of which offer an insight into Georgia’s medieval heritage.

Beyond its historic buildings, Kutaisi makes an excellent base for exploring the surrounding region. Caves, canyons, waterfalls and monasteries are all within reach, making the city an appealing destination for travellers who enjoy combining culture with outdoor adventures.

Discover Kutaisi and explore one of Georgia’s most historic and atmospheric cities.

Ancient History: Uplistsikhe and Gori

Uplistsikhe from a distance

Georgia’s history stretches back thousands of years, and few places bring that history to life quite like Uplistsikhe.

Carved directly into the sandstone cliffs, this extraordinary ancient cave town offers a glimpse into a very different era. Its network of chambers, tunnels and rock-cut structures tells the story of a settlement that once played an important role in the region.

Nearby Gori provides another fascinating historical perspective, with its associations with Joseph Stalin and its place in Georgia’s more recent history.
