Mexaha Melnik

Mexaha Melnik

Melnik is known for its wine and Bulgarians love their meat. So Mexaha Melnik seems the perfect combination. A Mexaha is a local, traditional Bulgarian bistro or restaurant. You can find them in cities and scattered throughout the countryside. In the spirit of the locals Charlotte and I are here at Mexaha Melnik (Bistro Melnik) for dinner.

Goats near Harsovo

It has been an eventful day exploring Bachkovo Monastery followed by a hearty lunch of soup and local sweet bread (giant doughnut) as well as a walk exploring Nevyastata Eco Trail a side stop at a the Kemera Old Bridge of Zmeitsa, just off the highway. We were slowed by a flock of goats near Harsovo and finally made it to Melnik just as the sun was hitting the sides of the limestone peaks in a spectacular local version of sunset.

Bistro Melnik

After a quick lap of the small town to stretch our legs we gather a bench seat next to the dry river bed and order a jug of local red wine. After being convinced that no the else was really an option, we agree to the recommended mix grill for two.

Jug ‘o red

We reflect on our day, toasting to some good sightseeing before our meal arrives. As the sizzling plate is delivered to our table, it turns out that the generous shared platter could easily serve four. Nevertheless we do our best with the appetite we have, sampling a selection of grilled beef, lamb, chicken and sausage as well as some of the accompanying char grilled vegetables.

Nazdrave (cheers!)

I admit that the chilly night, fragrant smoke from the grill and a glass (or jug) of red helps to encourage my appetite.

Unable to finish the meal (albeit quite capable of finishing the wine!), we consider ourselves outdone (out-meated!) and head back to our hotel. Across the flower-lined wooden bridge and along the pretty cobbled street. Sleep is brought on by a full day of exploring, no doubt assisted somewhat by our full bellies. It seems a hearty Bulgarian meal and wine will do that.

Good To Know

There only seemed to be a handful of restaurants in Melnik and when we visited. Not all of them were open but I’m sure this is due to the very quite night in May. Check before arriving if you have a specific preference.

We traveled Bulgaria with Adriana from Private Guide Bulgaria.

Would I Return?

Yes. With a few extra people to share the meal!
