5 Things To Do In Plovdiv

Philippopolis Ancient Theatre

Plovdiv is charming from the get go and given the range of things to see here, it is no wonder it was Europe’s Capital of Culture 2019. On our list of ‘must see’ items are 5 things that no trip to Plovdiv is complete without.

Arriving late on a Sunday afternoon the locals are dancing traditional Bulgarian style in Dzhumaya Square. Music sweeps both dancers and spectators up in its rhythm. I glance over my shoulder and Roman ruins greet me, lying in wait to be noticed. This ancient city has so many layers to explore from Emperor Hadrian’s time right through to the present and everything in between.

What to do:

The Ancient Stadium of Philippopolis

Situated largely underneath the modern high street in Plovdiv, the parts of this ancient stadium that are exposed are a striking hint at what remains hidden. Built during Emperor Hadrian’s reign in the 2nd Century AD this enormous sports arena seated up to 30,000. That adds up to quite a crowd cheering on their favorite athletes. I can almost hear the roar of the crowd…

Kapana Street Art

Some of the city’s best modern art is outdoors. Take a walk through the Kapana (also known as The Trap) and take in the murals in this dedicated creative district. The cultural hub with its recognisable variety of street art is a delight, think open air gallery meets the best coffee in town.

Plovdiv Ancient Town

Plovdiv’s ancient town is at the centre of the old town area. Head to the ancient town, huddled around one of Plovdiv’s seven hills. Topped with ancient ruins, Nebet Tepe gives way to cobbled streets that pave the entrance to a number of significant museums, many of which are set in historic houses. Don’t miss the Hisar Kapia (Old Town Gate) and the striking murals at the St. Konstantin and Elena Church.

Kuyumdzhiev’s House

Kuyumdzhiev’s historic house also contains the Regional Ethnographic Museum. This is a great way to combine a look inside at a traditional house of the Plovdiv symmetrical Revival style and check out some interesting Bulgarian cultural artifacts.

Dinner in The Trap

Even if you’ve already started your day in The Trap (Kapana), head back here for an aperitif and dinner. You can witness the streets come alive with Plovdiv’s creatives and the cool crowd. Plus, there are some excellent wine bars and music venues. If you’re not too tired from your daylight sightseeing adventures that is.

Good To Know

Plovdiv’s many layers of history means that it’s worth spending a few days here (2 – 3) if you want to have time to linger in a few museums as well as enjoy the nightlife. If you have more on your agenda, this is a good base to explore the country surrounds and the mountain ranges to the north and south.

Would I Return?

Yes. It wasn’t named the Cultural Capital of Europe for nothing. There is plenty more to explore both in and around Plovdiv.
