Tri Trang Beach

Tri Trang Beach

Just a few minutes south of Patong Beach, one of Thailand’s most famous strips, Tri Trang Beach feels like a different world altogether.

While Patong, Phuket’s most famous beach, buzzes with jet skis, beach clubs and a constant stream of visitors, Tri Trang occupies a quieter corner of the coastline. Sheltered by forested headlands and tucked into a small bay, it offers a welcome escape for travellers who appreciate convenience but don’t necessarily want the crowds that come with it.

Patong’s Quiet Alternative

Laid back beach days

At first glance, Tri Trang lacks the dramatic wow-factor of some of Phuket’s better-known beaches. There are no sweeping panoramas or postcard-perfect viewpoints competing for attention. Instead, its appeal lies in something less obvious: a sense of calm that is increasingly difficult to find elsewhere on the island.

Tri Trang isn’t just a beach we visit in passing. It served as our base, our rhythm, and for twelve days, the place we keep returning to, no matter where else the day may have taken us.

A different pace – our base, our rhythm

The beach itself is a pleasant stretch of soft sand framed by lush green hills, with generally calm conditions. Swimming is best enjoyed around high tide, when the water is deeper and clearer. At low tide, rocky sections emerge across parts of the bay, creating opportunities for easy snorkelling and marine life spotting. It may not be Phuket’s premier snorkelling destination, but the accessible reef adds extra dimension to a relaxed beach day.

Tri Trang’s Rhythm

Views from the Hide Out

We stay at The HideOut, perched high above the beach.

Mornings begin early. The beach is at its calmest, the tide still low, revealing stretches of sand that disappear later in the day. A brisk morning walk is followed by fresh juice and a simple Thai breakfast.

Breakfast with a view

After returning to the room to change and gather things, we make our way back down, towels under arm, passing the sun loungers being set up. We find a comfortable spot in the shade.

As the tide shifts, so does the beach. At high tide, the water becomes clear and inviting, perfect for long swims and slow snorkels along the rocky edges of the bay. The boys amuse themselves with skim boarding. I settle into the sun lounging, interspersing the day with reapplications of sunscreen and an occasional dip or stroll. Delicious Thai meals and refreshments are at hand. Jason orders a cold beer and we have everything we need as the day unfolds without effort.

The tide shifts

The climb back up to the room each day is steep and never quite easy, always slightly underestimated. But the reward is a sweeping view across the bay that changes constantly with the light. From up here, Tri Trang never looks the same twice.

The afternoon brings a low key rhythm. One day it might involve a Thai massage, the next, a book and a nap. The boys take a break from the sun and the heat, retreating to the airconditioning to play games or watch Netflix.

As the sun goes down

After showers and fresh, dry clothes, the air smells of salt and moisturised, scented skin. Descending back down the to beach at sunset for a cocktail, the beach has shifted again. At low tide, the shoreline expands dramatically, revealing tidal pools and scattered rocks where hermit crabs move in small, deliberate formations once the sun goes down.

After The Sun

Evenings are a completely different experience. Whether we have been at the beach for the day, or taken a day trip into Patong’s noise, the historic lanes of Phuket Old Town, or the more polished stretches of nearby Kata or Kamala beach, Tri Trang feels like exhaling. We return just as the light softens over the bay, the sea turns from blue to dark glass.

After the sun

Conversations slow down at this time of day and everything seems to stretch out a little longer. An evening walk along the beach leads to Pad Thai and sticky mango rice. Night brings its own quiet theatre. Lights from the hillside resorts and the HideOut reflect across the water, flickering gently with the movement of the tide. The beach has emptied, save for the occasional walker and the soft rhythm of waves pulling back from the sand.

Night brings its own quiet theatre

The next morning, the same. There’s a comfort in repetition here; the kind that only comes after a few days of not needing to decide what to do or where to go next. It’s where we return after busy days, where we watch tides shift without hurry, and where a simple stretch of coastline quietly anchors the rhythm of our family trip to Phuket.

Tri Trang isn’t a beach that competes for attention. It becomes part of your routine without asking permission.

Good To Know

Facilities at Tri Trang Beach are deliberately low-key. A handful of beachfront restaurants and small vendors provide cold drinks, simple Thai meals and light snacks throughout the day. Sun loungers can usually be found along the sand. While traditional Thai massages are available for those looking to fully embrace the slower pace.

One of Tri Trang’s greatest strengths is its location. Several resorts occupy the surrounding hillsides while Patong’s restaurants, nightlife and shopping are only a short tuk-tuk ride away. We enjoy the convenience of staying close to Phuket’s busiest hub while being able to retreat to a considerably more peaceful coastline.

The trade-off, naturally, is variety. Those seeking beach clubs, extensive dining options or a lively atmosphere may find Tri Trang a little too subdued. Yet for me, that’s precisely the point.

Tri Trang is not the beach that demands your attention. It’s the beach that rewards those who stumble upon it. A quiet refuge where the pace slows, the crowds thin out and Phuket feels just a little more relaxed.

Would I Return?

Yes.
