Golden Sunset, Falasarna

Golden Sunset, Falasarna

It is a golden day if not yet a golden sunset. We have spent the morning at Ancient Falasarna and are now ready for some lunch and a rest in the shade. Golden Sunset Taverna catches our eye – with spectacular views and a great menu.

Family Day

We settle in at a table on the terrace under the large, shady fig tree. We order beers and cold water and take in the scene – sweeping views of Falasarna, the water and beaches to the north and south. Scattered beach goers swimming, walking, jet skiing, sunbathing and lazing on sun beds. Directly below us goats bleat along a dusty road to a smaller, rocky beach where a few people have set up base for snorkeling around the rocks.

For lunch we order stuffed baked tomatoes and peppers, grilled eggplant, chips and tzatziki.

Stuffed tomatoes and peppers

The food is excellent. As we walked in one of the cooks was rolling vine leaves by hand a sure sign that home cooking prevails. The stuffed vegetables are herby and moist, baked to succulent perfection. The eggplant parmigiana is superb, perhaps the best eggplant dish I have ever had. Simple flavors melded into a magnificent aria for the palette. The food makes me feel like singing although I spare everyone the discomfort.

A delicious meal

As good as the food is, the view is even more spectacular. The bay is crystal clear, the beach bright and the sun hot. Pockets of color pop against the sand and azure background – rocks in every color from granite, grey and red to almost black, vibrant green outcrops of bushes and trees, pockets of red summer flowers and a rainbow of beach umbrellas and towels dot the shore.

A refreshing beverage

After our meal and hour in the shade we should feel refreshed. Unfortunately we don’t. The day is too hot to just sit here. We pay our check, gather our things and move on. All there is for it now is to hit the beach. We change and walk down the drive to discover Falasarna Beach. No wonder people have lived here since ancient times! Those ancient Greeks were really onto something. What a wonderful spot to holiday, swim, dig, walk, eat and gaze. As I kick back on my sun lounge for the afternoon, I’m not sure that I’ll ever want to leave.

Good To Know

Falasarna is a popular beach for day trippers. If you are after a quiet corner of Crete, this could easily be the place. Excellent beaches, excellent food and golden sunsets galore.

Would I Return?

Yes.
