Heading to Troyes after our beautiful stay in Auxerre, but at the same time having been overwhelmed by all the old towns and historic sights, we spot an Outlet Centre on the way into town. Stopping for a quick rest and a stretch of the legs our mornings’ shopping quickly turns into the best part of the day.
Retail Therapy
We’ve both done quite well, myself in particular departing with numerous purchases from (up until now, unknown) French labels and Hugo Boss while Jase also visited Hugo Boss, bought new squash shorts and picked up some bargain trousers and a new jacket.
As we hit the Troyes old town later in the afternoon, we’re both looking very smart in a selection of our new purchases. After our splurge today, however, we opt for another bedroom picnic before an after dark exploration of more cobbled streets, stunning medieval architecture and mesmerizingly beautiful Christmas lights.
More Old Town Charm
The next morning includes more explorations of the old town including picking up fresh baguette, cheese and wine from the well known Marché des Halles. Perhaps there is another croissant almonde or two in there as well, I can neither confirm nor deny.
There’s no denying this medieval old town’s gorgeous 16th century feel. With its narrow, cobbled streets lined with colorful, half-timbered houses, the town is also home to several Gothic churches with striking stained-glass windows. These include the Troyes Cathedral, the Église Sainte-Madeleine and the Basilique Saint-Urbain.
However, after a wander around, even I have to admit that today, I need a break from history. We view the churches from the outside then give up on ‘more old stuff’ as Jason puts it.
On the way out of town (northside) there’s another outlet center and we head there for a second round of retail therapy. The remainder of the afternoon is somewhat less successful than the day before but makes us realise how well we’d done initially.
From here, we jump on the motorway and head express to Paris to get ourselves settled into our apartment in Marais and ready for company and New Year celebrations.
Good To Know
Troyes has a small yet pretty old town with all the usual cobbled streets, narrow alleyways and medieval charm. The markets are some of the best in the region, as are the restaurants, bars and cafes.
However, if you’re after entertainment of the retail kind, there are two large outlet centers located on the outskirts of town.
Would I Return?
Yes.
