Bryant Park

Bryant Park

Bryant Park is located in the heart of Manhattan, New York City, between 40th and 42nd Streets, and Fifth and Sixth Avenues. It’s adjacent to the iconic New York Public Library and surrounded by skyscrapers. And, with the number of people here this evening to see a movie, it’s not hard to believe that it is one of the busiest public spaces in the city.

Historically known as Reservoir Square, a reservoir was built on this spot in 1847 to supply fresh water to the city. In 1884, the iconic New York Public Library replaced the reservoir. At the same time the park was redesigned by the duo Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. These are the same renowned landscape architects who designed Central Park.

Today, Bryant Park serves as a vibrant urban oasis. It offers a range of amenities and activities for residents and visitors alike. The lush green lawns, tree-lined walkways and beautifully landscaped gardens are a respite from the surrounding hustle and bustle. Tonight I am a tourist, lucky enough to have stumbled onto what seems to be a local experience. On the park’s central lawn, the summer movie program unfolds with the political drama All The King’s Men.

The park also boasts a stunning French-style carousel, known as Le Carrousel, which is a favourite attraction for children and children at heart. In the heart of NYC, Bryant Park bursts to life year-round with concerts, markets and cultural events. Yet until today’s fleeting visit, I only knew it as the glamorous backdrop to glossy magazine spreads from New York Fashion Week and unforgettable scenes from Sex and the City.

Good To Know

The park also hosts an array of cultural events, including art exhibitions, theater performances and literary readings. Additionally, Bryant Park is home to several food kiosks and a restaurant, offering a variety of culinary options for park-goers.

Bryant Park’s central location makes it easily accessible, with numerous subway lines and bus routes nearby. It has become a beloved gathering place for New Yorkers and visitors alike. Bryant Park offers a harmonious blend of nature, culture, and community in the heart of this bustling city.

Would I Return?

Yes. For fashion week, movies, events, a picnic or just to “stand still”.
