Dubai has a talent for making an ordinary evening feel cinematic. Tonight the city leaned all the way in – glowing fountains, a buzzing opera house and a musical that has redefined modern theatre. With Diana and Charlotte by my side, we set out for a night that blends food, friendship and full-scale Broadway magic: Wicked at Dubai Opera.
This was never going to be just a show. In Dubai, the journey matters as much as the destination.
Dinner by the Fountains
We start the evening at Din Tai Fung, tucked inside the ever-expanding world of Dubai Mall. Few places balance consistency and comfort quite like Din Tai Fung. Its open kitchen, steady rhythm and meticulous dumpling craft set the perfect tone for the night ahead.
We time dinner deliberately. As the sun slipped behind the skyline, the Dubai Fountain show kicks off, sending arcs of water dancing into the twilight. From our table, we watch the choreography unfold – music, movement and light – an unintentional overture to the performance still to come.

Conversation flows easily. Diana talks work. We swap news of husbands, families and travel plans. We linger long enough to watch another fountain show. They never get old and we know full well that Dubai Opera waited just a short walk away. The anticipation is part of the journey.
Eventually, practicality wins. We settle the bill, step off the terrace and join the crowds, headed toward the Opera district.
Dubai Opera

The walk from Dubai Mall to Dubai Opera never disappoints. Although only short, it’s one of those urban journeys that feels designed for reflection. The Burj Khalifa looms overhead, the fountains pulse behind us, and the Opera House comes into view – sleek, modern and quietly commanding.

Dubai Opera’s dhow-inspired architecture always feels intentional. It anchors the city’s cultural ambitions while nodding to heritage, a blend that mirrors Dubai itself. As we join the pre-show crowd, the atmosphere shifts from casual to electric. Dresses sharpen. Conversations hush. Phones come out for one last photo.

Inside, the space opens into warm wood, soft lighting and impeccable acoustics. Dubai Opera doesn’t just host performances, it elevates them. We find our seats, champagne in hand, and wait for the lights to fall.
Wicked Takes The Stage
From its first note, Wicked commands the room.
For those unfamiliar, Wicked reimagines the Land of Oz long before Dorothy arrives, telling the story of Elphaba – the misunderstood, green-skinned girl who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West – and her complicated friendship with Glinda, the future Good Witch.

The production delivers everything I expect: soaring vocals, elaborate costumes and set pieces that are both whimsical and imposing. Elphaba’s journey unfolds with emotional clarity, while Glinda’s arc balances humor, ambition and unexpected vulnerability.
What stands out most is the chemistry between the leads. Their friendship anchors the entire show, grounding the spectacle in something deeply human. Laughter ripples through the audience during Glinda’s lighter moments, while collective silence settles in during Elphaba’s defining choices.
And then, of course, comes Defying Gravity. Even though I know it’s coming, the moment still hits. Elphaba rises. The music swells. The theatre holds its breath. Dubai Opera feels impossibly still and then impossibly thrilled.

Wicked – Musical v. Book
Seeing Wicked live always invites comparison with its source material: Wicked by Gregory Maguire. While the musical draws its core characters and premise from the novel, the two experiences differ significantly in tone, complexity and intent.
The book leans darker and far more political. Maguire’s Oz explores authoritarianism, propaganda, social injustice and moral ambiguity in depth. Elphaba’s story in the novel unfolds slowly, often uncomfortably and without the clear emotional resolution the stage version provides. Relationships feel messier. Motivations blur. The world itself feels harsher.
The musical, by contrast, streamlines the narrative. It sharpens the focus on friendship, identity and choice. Political themes remain, but they serve to advance the emotional journey rather than dominate it. Characters become more immediately sympathetic and the story moves with urgency and clarity.
Glinda, in particular, transforms between formats. On stage, she sparkles – comic, charming and ultimately reflective. In the book, she appears more distant, shaped by privilege and circumstance in more subtle ways. The musical invites us to love her; the book asks us to observe her.
Neither version replaces the other. Instead, they coexist. The novel challenges. The musical connects. Seeing Wicked live after reading the book adds layers to both experiences, enriching the story rather than simplifying it.
Audience & Atmosphere
Dubai crowds bring a unique energy to theatre. The audience here is international, engaged and fully present. Applause comes generously. The standing ovation is earned. There’s a sense of satisfaction as the curtain closes on the first act, it’s been a long wait to see Wicked performed at this level in the city.
Intermission buzzes with conversation. People compare favorite songs, debate character motivations and snap photos beneath the Opera’s glowing interiors. We dissect the first act, already predicting emotional moments to come.
Dubai Opera excels at hosting large-scale musicals without losing intimacy. Every note carries. Every pause matters. The venue allows Wicked to shine.
Final Bow
When the final curtain falls, the applause isn’t rushed. The cast returns several times, visibly moved by the response. As we filter out into the night, the energy lingers, one of those post-show highs that refuses to fade quickly.

We walk along the Boulevard, the city quieter now but no less luminous. Light shimmer, reflecting off the skyscrapers that line the street, amplified by shiny cars moving through the streets. Conversations soften. There’s something about live theatre that recalibrates you, reminding you to slow down and feel more deeply.
Tonight Dubai Opera delivered again – not just with scale, but with soul.
Good To Know
Some nights entertain you. Others stay with you. This one did both.
From dumplings by the fountains to defying gravity under the lights of Dubai Opera, the evening captured the joy of shared experiences and the power of storytelling. Wicked reminds us that perspective matters, that labels deceive and that sometimes the most misunderstood stories deserve the brightest stage.
Dubai, once again, proved it knows how to set the scene.
