The Bukit Sari Luwak Coffee Plantation is less of a plantation (the plantations are elsewhere – scattered around the island) and more of a shopfront. Nevertheless it’s a lovely little leafy green detour. Located on the road between Uluwatu Temple and the Garunda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Cultural Park, you can stop here for a short coffee tour and talk, followed by a free tasting.
Tour
The talk takes us walking through the garden to see coffee plants growing, coffee beans ripening and the famous Luwak. He’s looking pretty uninterested today but maybe it’s just because he’s busy processing. Both the name and his appearance remind me of something out of Dr. Seuss.
After the short tour there is a pretty garden out the back, complete with waterfall, to enjoy whilst coffee tasting. On the way out, Luwak Coffee beans are available for purchase along with a selection of teas, chocolate and other local products. But what is so special about Luwak Coffee?
We learn about the Luwak process whereby the coffee beans have an uncommon method for processing. The beans are fed to the Luwak who partially digests them giving them a particular flavor. Once they are passed (yes, it sounds gross) the outer layer of the bean is removed and the remaining beans are rinsed and cleaned before further processing.
Finally, the beans are roasted and then ground. Kopi Luwak (Luwak coffee) doesn’t refer to the bean but the method undertaken to make the final product.
Tasting
A cup of the famous Luwak Coffee, the most expensive coffee in the world, will set you back IDR50,000 (about AUD5), but along with the tour and free tasting, it doesn’t seem that expensive and is an experience in itself.
Along with our cup of coffee we enjoy an array of different flavored coffee and tea.
The setting and the garden are really beautiful and it’s a perfect little spot for a rest in the shade. Once we’re finished we walk through the gift shop to select a few souvenirs of our experience.
Good To Know
Bukit Sari Agro Luwak Coffee is located on Jalan Temu Dewi, just off Jalan Raya Uluwatu. The coffee tasting and tours open from 10am – 6pm, 7 days a week.
A cup of Luwak coffee is IDR50,000 but the tour and tastings are free. There is a nice shop selling coffee, chocolate and souvenirs after the tour and tasting.
Stop here on the way to or from Uluwatu Temple.
Sightseeing in Bali is best done with a guide. We toured with Toris (WhatsApp +62 859-3448-1212).
Would I Return?
Yes. If in the area this is a lovely spot for a rest.
