The Tegenungan Waterfall is a 15m tall waterfall located just 10km south west of Ubud. It’s a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. This is an attraction where you can come to Tegenungan Kemenuh (or Kemenuh Village) for half an hour or half a day, depending on your agenda. It’s on the Petanu River and surrounded by jungle.
The waterfall itself is a natural attraction. It is formed along the Petanu River and travels through the jungle to the precipice where it plunges into the pool below. The beauty would seem a more natural phenomenon if it wasn’t so overrun with people.
Nevertheless on such a hot day, the promise of some cool relief is too tempting to pass on and I join the throng for a dip in the pool below. The water is pleasantly cool but the river’s rocky bottom makes it hard to navigate without some appropriately footwear. So after a little float and enough time to enjoy the residue off the falls and feel refreshed, I make my way back to shore.
Onsite, a little way along the path from which we came, is a restaurant and swimming pool overlooking the waterfall. In fact, this seems like a much better option to me if there is time enough to make the entrance fee worthwhile.
In addition to this, at the top of the waterfall near the carpark there are the usual market stalls with food, cold drinks and all manner of souvenirs. If you have forgotten anything for the day (sunscreen, hat, water), or come unprepared (swimwear, towel) you’ll probably find it here. Through the souvenirs, there is a lookout, just before the stairs down to the falls.
Good To Know
This is a picturesque place to stop and refresh. The falls and surrounding jungle is pretty and there was a lot of water in the river. It was busy though and there were no chances for some of those perfect waterfall shots that you see in travel advertisements. For a calmer visit with less crowds, be sure to arrive early morning.
Would I Return?
No.
