Römerberg

Römerberg

Römerberg is a historic square located in the heart of Frankfurt’s old town (Altstadt). It is one of the city’s most iconic and most picturesque spots, known for its beautifully restored medieval buildings and its historical significance. It’s a great place to start exploring the Old Town and a great place to stop as there are many cafes and restaurants in which to pause for a rest, something to eat and drink and somewhere to soak in the atmosphere.

Römerberg showcases a charming ensemble of half-timbered houses. The string along the East of the square are renowned for conjuring the heart of Frankfurt am Main and Römerberg itself. This is confirmed by the many magnets and postcards that reflect the same image. Many of these buildings were reconstructed after the destruction caused during World War II. This means that the square continues to exudes a quaint and traditional atmosphere. It’s clear this is a popular destination for both locals and tourists. Tonight it’s swarming with people on this warm Saturday in June.

The buildings feature intricate architectural details and colorful facades, providing a glimpse into the city’s medieval past.

The Römer

In particular the Römer itself is of particular interest. This building, located on Römerberg, serves as Frankfurt’s city hall. With its three gabled facades, it is an emblematic symbol of the city as the Römer has a long history dating back to the 15th century. It is still used for official purposes and events today. Its interior features ornate halls and chambers that are only occasionally open to the public. However, the facade alludes to its grandeur and historic significance with its flags flying and balcony which conjures images of medieval pomp and ceremony.

The Frankfurt Cathedral

Officially known as St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral, the Frankfurt Cathedral is situated quite near to Römerberg. Its towering spire and Gothic architecture make it a prominent landmark in the area and it can be seen from almost anywhere within the Alt Stadt and certainly from around town and especially along the river Main. The cathedral has witnessed numerous historical events and is a significant religious and cultural site in Frankfurt. Read more about the Frankfurt Cathedral here.

Fountain of Justice

In the center of Römerberg, you’ll find the Fountain of Justice (Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen). This Renaissance-style fountain depicts the allegorical figure of Justice holding a scale and a sword. It symbolizes the importance of justice and fairness in the city.

Fountain of Justice

In addition to this, Römerberg, with its Fountain of Justice, has been a marketplace and gathering place for centuries. Today, it continues to host various events and festivals, including the popular Frankfurt Christmas Market during the holiday season. The square comes alive with food stalls, crafts, live music, and a festive atmosphere. It is equally festive tonight. As I sit with a Frankfurter and potato salad for dinner, tourists and locals alike sit with steins of beer and street performers add to the atmosphere making today feel like as much a celebration of life as it is.
