Al Forsan Cable Water Skiing

Al Forsan Water Skiing

A day in Abu Dhabi sees us at the purpose built Al Forsan. This sports and entertainment venue is based around a Marriott Hotel with equestrian, go karting and two cable waterski lakes.

This is action packed adventure! It’s hot in the UAE right now and so something outdoors calls for water. We arrive and check in, pay and are kitted up and on the water in no time. The two purpose built lakes consist of three cable water ski courses: a beginner lake, an advanced lake and a straight line cable for getting the hang of things and practicing new tricks.

I start off on a kneeboard which allows me to get a feel for the cable, the speed and the course. It’s a bit of a thrill, speeding across the water at somewhere around 30 – 35km/h. The turns are tricky as the speed varies – slows and then quickens with a bit of a jerk – similar to a t- bar ski lift but a lot faster!

Family fun

I need to concentrate to keep my balance and navigate the corner at the right angle and it does involve a bit of practice (and a few spills). It also involves a lot of upper body strength and I find I need a little rest in between the action.

First time wakeboarding

Wakeboarding

I have water skied before but never wake boarded so it’s all a bit new and slightly daunting. Harley & I jump on the straight line cable and we’re the only ones around. Our operator gives us some helpful instruction and before long we’re up and away.

The turning is more tricky and it takes a few more turns to hone the skill. Soon, we have graduated to the beginner lake where we take our new capabilities to the next level. Getting going on the cable is far more tricky than the straight line where the operator is able to adjust take off and speed to suit ability. Now we’re in the deep end as the cable travels at a constant rate making the take off quite dramatic.

My heart is pounding as I await the pull – and the thrill – of take off. A couple of false starts and I finally get the hang of it.

After the hour allotted for our fun, we order some lunch. Jason & Harley sign up for another hour in the afternoon but my arms and shoulders tell me that I’m done for the day. Instead I sit in the shade with a book and a new friend, enjoying the scenery and, vicariously, the continued excitement.

A new friend
