Kolymvari
This small fishing village on the island of Crete, Kolymvari (also Kolymbari) is located about 25km (30mins) drive from the Venetian port town of Chania.
Out and about on The Little Fun Train for the afternoon, we visit this tiny fishing village which promises a lovely spot to linger for a day. This picturesque little town boasts clear, protected swimming, a string of restaurants and the nearby Gonia Monastery.
Although not as popular as the nearby resorts of Maleme and Platanias, Kolymvari nevertheless exudes a certain charm that the larger resorts can’t live up to. The fishing boats drift in and out of the tiny harbor. The swimming area nearby is unruffled and remains as calm as anything on this hot summer’s day. While beach shoes are a necessity, the water is crystal clear and there is plenty of space on the beach to pull up some pebbles.
The string of restaurants along the water call throughout the day. Coffee is brewing early. By lunchtime, the smell of grilled fish fills the air and locals and holidaymakers alike partake in a glass of wine over a lazy lunch. By mid afternoon, the beers are flowing and I can imagine that the calamari and Greek salads stretch long into the night. My mouth waters just walking by.
Gonia
A short walk from the tiny harbour up a cicada lined road is the Our Lady of Gonia Monastery which overlooks the spectacular Gulf of Chania.
This picturesque complex boasts a church set within the stunning monastery grounds and museum. The museum is small and well thought out with ample space in the cool of the rocky building. If you’re not particularly interested in the history, it is enough to sit and soak. Under the porticoes or on the ramparts overlooking the sea are the perfect place to quietly contemplate life.
Surroundings
Apart from the beachside, harbour, restaurants and monastery, the town boasts a small main street. Nearby, the quiet countryside engulfs and protects the village. There are churches surrounded by vines, views galore and the promise of peace and quiet. Ample time is available to reflect while the next activity is contemplated. Will it be lunch, a swim or a walk?
