“I’m too busy” I think to myself on the commute home, “I’m just too tired to go out tonight”. It’s been a bit of a rough day at work. After a day like today, going out isn’t the most appealing thought. I want to hit the couch and curl up.
I get home and dump by handbag and computer in the corner. I know I should log back in but I push the thought to the back of my mind and join my son at the dinner table. He’s happily oblivious to how highly strung I’m feeling and rambles on about all sorts of things. We do the usual bath, teeth, story, bed routine and I haven’t changed out of my work clothes. I have done this on purpose.
Yes, I’m too busy, yes, I’m tired. But tomorrow I will be no less busy or tired for having stayed at home tonight. I decide a night out with the girls is exactly the therapy that I need.
I head out the door and jump in a taxi. Twenty minutes later I walk into Cargo at Pier 7 and the earlybirds are already there. I smile, immediately knowing this was a good idea.
The view from here is incredible but it’s not the view I’m here for. We’re expecting a great group. It’s going to be a nice night. I grab a drink and we start chatting, before too long, the usual suspects start to arrive. We say our ‘hellos’, order some food and settle in to catch up and enjoy ourselves.
The conversation is light and free flowing. I am amongst the beautiful people. These are my friends and even those that I am not particularly close to accept me for who I am (I think!). Everyone is juggling life just as busily as I am – children, husbands, jobs, house, family, life, expectataions – we’re all in it together. Here I can be myself. I don’t want to talk about work.
More friends arrive, Melissa is busy organizing and being the social butterfly, Dina (diva) is here and Heidi, who emerged as the dancing queen from Dina’s birthday party a couple of weeks ago arrives, all with their usual smiles. I sit back and listen to the stories of their lives, all these stylish women, going about life.
The conversation turns to travel plans, we have a long weekend coming up. Nour is going to visit her parents in Abu Dhabi, Nivine is heading off to visit her son at university in London, most of us are just glad to have a couple of extra days up our sleeves.
We order some more food – the platters of sushi and sashimi are divine and disappear quickly, as do the skewers and mini burgers included in the Cargo Tasting Platter and the tasty morsels offered on the Seafood Platter.
I wash my down with a very decent glass of Hardy’s ‘The Riddle’ cabernet merlot (Australian). There are a lot of laughs and a lot of love amongst these ladies. There’s a few giggles going on.
A little while later the mood takes us and we head inside for a dance. The music shifts though and the mood has passed. We head back outside and there’s still a few kicking on but it’s a work night and I need to get home.
I wander back outside with a small group and head off to find a taxi. I have only been out for a few hours, it’s just after 11pm but I feel lighter and happier than when I left the house. It’s true that laughter is the best medicine.
And after all that, the work thing turned around the next day. Even more reason to have been enjoying myself rather than letting the “too busy, too tired” get in the way of what’s really important.
Good To Know
Pier 7 is a popular dining destination, located at Dubai Marina. It consists of 7 floors of dining, with 7 restaurants, each with their own distinct style. Cargo runs ladies nights every Tuesday with three free drinks for ladies. The streets style, Asian inspired food including platters to share makes for a pleasent evening. Don’t forget to throw in a few of your favorite friends.
Would I Return?
Yes. Cargo offers a good value evening out, especially on ladies’ night. Be sure to book to ensure seating on the balcony to take in those magnificent views (thanks Melissa!).
