Straddie Sailing

Sailing off Home Beach

If I could only choose one place to be in Australia, I think this would have to be it.  North Stradbroke Island (referred to as ‘Straddie’ by the locals), on Brisbane’s door step is a hop, skip and a jump.  Yet when you step off the ferry from the mainland, it feels like a world away.  This is paradise.

The beaches are long, the sand is white, the water is blue and the vibe for our annual Straddie holiday is relaxed.  We hop off the ferry and drive across the island, headed straight to Happy Days, our accommodation of choice, to unpack.

Every year we extend our Australia Day long weekend just an extra day or two and this year the holiday falls on a Tuesday so it’s turned into a five night affair.

The hobie cat has come with us this year and we have perfect sailing weather and lots of keen crew.  We launch off Home Beach and enjoy the day swimming, kayaking, sailing and lazing around in the sun.

Launching

First things first and we unpack the boat and get the hobie launched. Then, those of us that are still on the beach take to the water for a swim. There is no surf patrol here so we are cautious, even though the day is relatively calm.

When you can drive onto the beach with your gear, you don’t have to worry too much about what you can pack – bring out the esky!

The gear

With the esky nearby, the snacks and drinks are brought out. I lay out my towel and grab my book. With the sound of the waves as my backdrop, this is bliss.

Steve takes to the kayak and beach cricket is organised. My book might have to wait…

Would I Return?

Yes. Straddie is a home away from home and one of the most beautiful parts of Australia (in my opinion).
