Troyes’ Marché des Halles is a historic local produce market located in the heart of Troyes old town, a picturesque city in the Champagne region of northeastern France. The markets are well known for their vibrant atmosphere and role as a central hub for local commerce.
The Marché des Halles has its origins in Medieval France, with the current covered market hall having been constructed in the 19th century. It reflects the architectural style of that era.
Regardless of the architecture, the market continues to offer a variety of fresh produce, meats, cheeses and other local products. It’s clearly a popular spot for locals and and visitors looking to experience a simpler version of the region’s culinary delights.
I’m not one for snails but the lobster tails and salmon look pretty good. The variety of terrines is staggering and my mouth simply waters at the number of cheeses to choose from. My eyes water at the smell and at some of the prices.
Nevertheless, we source enough to keep us going for at least a couple of meals (plus snacks!) before heading out to explore further.
Situated in a charming part of Troyes and surrounded by historic buildings and narrow streets, the central location makes it a great place to start or finish exploring the city’s rich history. The lively market environment makes it a great place to linger and enjoy the atmosphere. Whether you’re looking to sample local cheeses, purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, or simply soak in the atmosphere, the Marché des Halles is a key destination in the heart of Troyes.
