The Burgundy region has a long tradition of winemaking, dating back to Roman times and Beaune’s Marché aux Vins, or Wine Market, is closely tied to this tradition. It began as a way for local producers to showcase and sell their wines. Eventually it developed into an important platform for both local producers and wine enthusiasts. Bringing both together and reflecting the region’s deep-rooted connection to viticulture, there’s no better place to take a sip.
The Wine Market
The traditional wine market usually takes place in the Palais des Congrès in Beaune, a grand building that adds to the event’s charm. Featuring a wide array of Burgundy wines from various local producers, ranging from well-known names to smaller, boutique wineries, the Market is part tradition and part legend. Attendees have the opportunity to taste and purchase a variety of wines, including some of the prestigious Burgundy appellations such as Chassagne-Montrachet, Gevrey-Chambertin, and Puligny-Montrachet.
Marché aux Vins
Today’s Marché aux Vins, a boutique wine market opposite the Hôtel-Dieu offers a similarly impressive assortment of French wines in its wood beamed shop. Tastings and cellar tours are a must if you can overcome some of the French superiority.
Not only is it possible to sample a diverse selection of wines, from light whites to robust reds, it’s a great chance to explore the nuances of Burgundy wines and discover new favorites.
The more populated tours may advertise a festive, local atmosphere with interactions between producers and attendees. These are touted as not just a wine tasting but a celebration of Burgundy’s wine making heritage. Being off season, while our guide is enthusiastic about the wine, he does not seem to be feeling too celebratory.
We’re happy with the educational component of the tour and the impressive historic setting. However, the knowledge and passion for wine is overshadowed by the desire for a sale. The clearly apathetic approach to tourists is somewhat offputting.
Good To Know
If you’re a wine enthusiast or simply curious about Burgundy’s wines, the Marché aux Vins in Beaune offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in one of France’s most celebrated wine regions.
